2010 Thoughts

Happy New Year!  I just read my New Year’s Thoughts for the beginning of 2010, which were very interesting. I think I was more profound last year than I am this year. Here were my Resolutions for 2010, let’s see how I did.

Resolution 1: Attend the temple more often. I feel I did this one, I know I went at least once every month, sometimes more than that.
Resolution 2: Give up sugar. This lasted until about Valentine’s day. I go through this every year. I have an overload of sugar over the holidays and then New Year’s rolls around and I feel the need to cleanse my body from all that refined sweetness. I’ll probably try it again this year, for a little while at least.
Resolution 3: Go somewhere foreign and/or tropical. Check, I went to England this past year. It didn’t make the tropical requirement, but I still had a fabulous time.
Resolution 4: Start some type of lessons. This didn’t happen. It was in the plans, but then I got mono and it kind of put a damper on things.

So, perhaps I didn't fulfill all my resolutions, but I still learned many lessons this year, some which I'm still learning. As I pondered over this past year, here are the main lessons that come to mind.

Lesson #1: The continual lesson of faith. The Lord knows better than we do. There were moments when I felt like I was stepping into the unknown which seemed so unclear and dark. I clung to answers from prayers as direction. Things come together, like they always do.
Lesson #2: Trust your own instinct and personal inspiration. Well-meaning friends are wonderful, but your gut feeling is better.
Lesson #3: Everyone has weaknesses; it is ok and even therapeutic to admit your weaknesses.  Too often we think by recognizing a weakness, it will make us appear well, weak.  In reality it is quite the opposite. By accepting, being open about and learning more about our weaknesses can give us strength to overcome and control them.

And now for a recap of the year...

2010 Highs (a few of the many):
• Flying up Provo Canyon in a small airplane (seriously, so cool!)
• Going to Disneyland
• Hiking! (Arches, Doughnut Falls, Aspen Grove, Snow Canyon and Zion National Park)
• My Parents Coming HOME From Their Mission!!!
• Going to Louisiana, so much fun!
• Going to ENGLAND with Talena!!! More specifically staying in a castle on the coast of the North Sea in England and seeing good friends there.
• Getting MARRIED!!!
• A birth of another darling nephew to add to group, plus the gaining of many more nephews and nieces through marriage.
• This past year I have become better friends with my Grandpa. I have visited him often and made him lunch and by doing so have learned so much about him and his life.

2010 Lows:
• Mono aka worst thing ever
• The passing away of a friend
• The stress of planning a wedding. (Actually trying on dresses was awesome, I did pretty well up to a few weeks before the wedding. Then I was so tired of making decisions that I actually cried in the parking lot of the reception center one night, ask my mom and sister, they were there. Marriage is much more blissful than engagement.)
• Friends moving away whom I miss and friends I miss because I moved.

And to finish this fun, reminiscent post, I decided to share some of my resolutions for 2011. I'm excited to see what this year has in store!

Resolutions for 2011:
Resolution #1: Learn a new skill (I’m right on track since Talena and I are going to take cake decorating classes and I got a ukulele for Christmas.)
Resolution #2: Go somewhere I’ve never been before.
Resolution #3: Make my personal scripture study, just that, study.
Resolution #4: Trying a little running once the weather warms up. Maybe even run a 5k. (People may laugh I even typed that out, because many run that every day, but I am not a running fan. I’m starting small.)

Oh Crafty Trees, Oh Crafty Trees...

I've become a finals widow, if you will, meaning Danny is crazy busy trying to finish up the semester.  This has given me extra time to use my crafty skills to get our place Christmas ready.  My first creations were these little paper/foam trees.  I've seen a few variations online of this craft. I put my own little twist on it.  They are really easy to make, just takes some time. Here is what you need: Scrap paper Hot glue gun 1" Circle punch Foam cone (at most craft stores) Toothpicks Note:  You are going to go to the craft store to buy the little foam cone and you will see styrofoam glue and you will think to yourself that would be a good thing to buy for this project.  Don't!  I got the styrofoam glue and it didn't work at all.  Just go with your trusty glue gun, it won't let you down. I think it's pretty self-explanatory by looking at the picture.  You just punch circles out from the scrap paper.  Then hot glue th...

Birthday Week!

This week is my birthday week, or should I say birth week.  However that sounds too much like birthing is occurring and that is not the case.  (Don't get any ideas, Danny and I have only been married for 5.5 months.)  Anyway, I firmly believe in celebrating birthdays for the whole week, because why not? Talena and I have a tradition each year that is the kick off for my birthday celebration.  You see, Talena and I were born 12 days apart.  On the midpoint day between our birthdays we go out to dinner to celebrate.  We always try to go some where we have never been before.  This year we went to the Citrus Grill, which was very delicious.  (Special thanks to Eliza for recommending the place.)  We had fun dining, laughing and sharing secrets, because that is what girls do. My dinner...doesn't it just make your mouth water. Talena Balena and Me. PS  We did have a funny little mishap with the dessert.  We got strawbe...

One of Those Nights

You know the time when you turn the corner too sharp and gouge one of your toes on the retro 70's border that lines your home and apparently you have really good blood circulation in your feet, because your toe starts bleeding profusely.  In an effort to stop the bleeding, you limp to the kitchen to grab a paper towel to clean up your poor toe only to track blood all over the carpet.  (But then, luckily the husband comes and helps clean up the blood trail, your sad, little toe and gets you a band-aid.)  So once you have recovered from your messy injury, your really nice husband makes you a smoothie to make you feel better, only for you to drip it down the front of you on one of your favorite shirts.  Yeah, it's been one of those nights.  Sigh. In other news, last week I went to the musical "Little Women" with Talena.  I wrote a review for the Utah Theater Bloggers Association, which you can read here .  It's been awhile since I've done any reviewin...
