General Conference Gems - October 2011

Hello Friends, as many of you know last weekend was General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  I always look forward to General Conference.  I always feel refreshed, enlightened and encouraged by the end.  Plus, it is the only time I can enjoy a bowl of popcorn during church, since we watch conference at home.  I thought I would share a few of my favorite quotes from this past conference.

“Motherhood is not a hobby, it is a calling. You do not collect children because you find them cuter than stamps. It is not something to do if you can squeeze the time in. It is what God gave you time for.” -Elder Neil L. Andersen quoting blogger Rachel Jankovic

"Regardless of the trials we face in this life, the Savior’s atonement provides lifeboats for everyone.  For those who think the trials they face are unfair, the atonement covers all of the unfairness of life." -Elder Quentin L. Cook

"Although the world has changed, the laws of God remain constant. They have not changed; they will not change. The ten commandments are just that—commandments. They are not suggestions." -President Thomas S. Monson

"When to have a child and how many children to have are private decisions to be made between a husband and wife and the Lord."  -Elder Neil L. Andersen  (Thank you Elder Andersen...just sayin...)

"It is better to look up!"  -Elder Carl B. Cook

"Not a day has gone by that I have not communicated with my Father in Heaven through prayer. It is a relationship I cherish—one I would literally be lost without."  -President Thomas S. Monson

"How can a father raise a happy, well-adjusted daughter in today’s increasingly toxic world? The answer has been taught by the Lord’s prophets. It is a simple answer, and it is true—'The most important thing a father can do for his daughter is to love her mother.'"  -Sister Eliane S. Dalton  (This was one of my favorite talks!  I'm lucky to have the Dad that I do!)

"Scriptures are like packets of light that illuminate our minds and give place to guidance and inspiration from on high. They can become the key to open the channel to communion with our Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son Jesus Christ."  -Elder Richard G. Scott

"We wait upon the Lord" - Elder Robert D. Hales

"This is a paradox of man:  compared to God, man is nothing; yet we are everything to God."  -President Dieter F. Uchtdorf  (Another one of my favorite talks!)

"I still feel that my mission was the best two years for my life."  Brother Matthew O. Richardson

"Sister Hedwig Biereichel, a woman in Germany who suffered much sorrow and deprivation during World War II.... When asked how she was able to “keep her testimony during all those trials, she replied: “I didn’t keep a testimony through those times—the testimony kept me.”  -Sister Barbara Thompson

"God sees you not only as a mortal being on a small planet who lives for a brief season—He sees you as His child. He sees you as the being you are capable and designed to become. He wants you to know that you matter to Him."  -President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

  1. It's funny how we liked so many of the same quotes. (Did you see my blog post?) You must take better notes - because you got all the wording exactly correct, where as I was just getting down as much as I could write while listening! Thanks for sharing. - Becky

  2. I loved conference too. Well, I always do. Its always so inspiring. I was most touched by the story of Elder Cook being so discouraged and how Pres. Monson just happened to be in the elevator and told him to look up. I also really loved the story by Jose' Alonzo when his child was lost in the market place. It is so wonderful how the Lord is so aware of each and every one of us.

Oh Crafty Trees, Oh Crafty Trees...

I've become a finals widow, if you will, meaning Danny is crazy busy trying to finish up the semester.  This has given me extra time to use my crafty skills to get our place Christmas ready.  My first creations were these little paper/foam trees.  I've seen a few variations online of this craft. I put my own little twist on it.  They are really easy to make, just takes some time. Here is what you need: Scrap paper Hot glue gun 1" Circle punch Foam cone (at most craft stores) Toothpicks Note:  You are going to go to the craft store to buy the little foam cone and you will see styrofoam glue and you will think to yourself that would be a good thing to buy for this project.  Don't!  I got the styrofoam glue and it didn't work at all.  Just go with your trusty glue gun, it won't let you down. I think it's pretty self-explanatory by looking at the picture.  You just punch circles out from the scrap paper.  Then hot glue th...

The End of the Road

There is a time when things fulfill their purpose and that is how I've been feeling with this blog of mine. When I started it, I needed my own little spot to share my thoughts and random stuff I found online. However, having two blogs has become excessive. It has been a good run (me and this little blog) and thanks for joining me. For now on, I will just be posting on my family blog . It's a private blog, but send me a message or a request if you would like to view it. Thanks to those who have taken the time to read my silly thoughts or look at pictures of my cute kiddo or some craft I made. It means a lot to me. Signing off, Jannifer

The Christmas Box

Remember how forever ago I said I would post a tutorial on how to fold these cute boxes.  Sigh, life is busy.  But I am here to fulfill my promise, even if it is a bit belated.  We had a Super Saturday at church with classes we could take.  My awesome friend, Becky, taught us how to create these, so I give her all the credit. What you need, paper, scissors, ruler pencil and some type of adhesive. 1.On the blank side of your paper draw an X from each corner, using a ruler. 2. Fold the bottom corner to the  center. 3. Fold the bottom corner one more  time up to the center. 4. Now you are  going to do the exact  two folds from steps 2 and 3 to the  opposing top corner, so your  paper will look like this. 5.  Unfold your paper and make the same folds to left and right corners that haven't been folded yet.  So once again, fold the point to the middle. 6.  Do a second fold to th...
