Great Online Finds of the Week

Last week I shared the intriguing/thought provoking things that I found online and I liked it so much, I'm doing it again. So here are a few internet items that peaked my interest this week.

#1 - I loved this article from the New Yorker.  It is kind of long, but you should take a minute and read it.  It is about what studies on the brain teach us about happiness, relationships and skills that bring fulfillment (in a nutshell).  Seriously fascinating.

#2 -  This video is called "The Birth of an Island".  It is a video of a volcanic island coming to surface in the Solomon Islands.  Apparently this is a very rare sight.  (I know I've never seen it before.)  Very cool.

#3 - I'm sure most of you have heard about the Salon.com article written by a  woman who is a self-proclaimed feminist and atheist but loves Mormon Mommy blogs.   I'll be honest, I read it about week ago and it didn't sit well with me.  While the author does call these blogs inspiring, it seems she won't come out and say that the inspiring part may lay deeper than their vintage clothes and the fun things they do with their kids, but maybe it is because of the faith of these bloggers.  In fact, I found the article quite condescending, being a Mormon woman, myself.  Plus, she totally had point out the "cute cupcakes" on these blogs right when I'm taking my cake decorating class.

However, the find that I did like online was the response to this article by CJane, a popular Mormon blogger. I love her call to Mormons to have faith and not fear when sharing our beliefs.  To be open about the foundation of our faith.

  3. Thought provoking stuff, Jannifer. But I guess I'm too old to appreciate C. Jane and Valentine Annie. They seem too silly to me; even though after a few reads I did enjoy Seriously So Blessed; I just don't have that kind of time to devote to blogs other than family. I've never had gelato before, but maybe I should give that a try, the cloudberry, whatever that is.

  4. Loved all of those! I'm going to make it my new goal to create something though provoking and interesting enough to make it on your blog!

Oh Crafty Trees, Oh Crafty Trees...

I've become a finals widow, if you will, meaning Danny is crazy busy trying to finish up the semester.  This has given me extra time to use my crafty skills to get our place Christmas ready.  My first creations were these little paper/foam trees.  I've seen a few variations online of this craft. I put my own little twist on it.  They are really easy to make, just takes some time. Here is what you need: Scrap paper Hot glue gun 1" Circle punch Foam cone (at most craft stores) Toothpicks Note:  You are going to go to the craft store to buy the little foam cone and you will see styrofoam glue and you will think to yourself that would be a good thing to buy for this project.  Don't!  I got the styrofoam glue and it didn't work at all.  Just go with your trusty glue gun, it won't let you down. I think it's pretty self-explanatory by looking at the picture.  You just punch circles out from the scrap paper.  Then hot glue th...

The End of the Road

There is a time when things fulfill their purpose and that is how I've been feeling with this blog of mine. When I started it, I needed my own little spot to share my thoughts and random stuff I found online. However, having two blogs has become excessive. It has been a good run (me and this little blog) and thanks for joining me. For now on, I will just be posting on my family blog . It's a private blog, but send me a message or a request if you would like to view it. Thanks to those who have taken the time to read my silly thoughts or look at pictures of my cute kiddo or some craft I made. It means a lot to me. Signing off, Jannifer

Things that brought me joy this week

This past week was Melina's birthday!  Since she lives far away, Talena and I put together a hula party in a box and mailed it to her.  We found all of these treasures at the dollar section at the front of Target.  My favorite moment was when we heard a lady gripe about how the discount section was full of a bunch of useless stuff that no one would buy.  At that very moment we turned the corner, with our hand basket full of awesome stuff we had found.  We just smiled. The party supplies The party agenda I was having a bit of a low evening and Danny suggested we go get my latest craving Sonic blasts.   (Ice cream + candy + whipped cream.)  I know you aren't supposed to feed sorrows with food, but this particular evening I made an exception.  Whoever made that Sonic blast was heaven sent.  It had more Reese's peanut butter cups than actual ice cream.  It's like they sensed my heavy heart and tried to heal it with choc...
